Capture the Flag (CTF)

This is the same old game we have been playing for years with a Tremont flair.  The object is to capture the flag of the opposing team.  Here are the basic rules:

  • The most important rule is NOT TO CHEAT.  Following this rule makes it fun for all.  We always emphasize this and we have some rules to have fun even when you get "captured".
  • Break up into to equal teams.
  • The flag.  The teams cannot be within 10 ft. of their own flag. For example, team A is guarding their flag.  Team B runs a guy in to within the 10 ft. radius.  If the team B player does not touch the flag, team A cannot tag him.  The moment a team B player touches the flag, team A can rush in and tag him.  If team B player is tagged, he must drop the flag and go to jail.  So, a team has a "safe haven" close to the opposing players flag.
  • One more thing about the flag.  We make sure an ADULT hides it and it is in PLAIN SITE.  This is very important.  Play lots of games (we can play 3 or 4 in an hour).
  • The Jail.  This works the same way as the flag.  There is a 10 ft. radius around the jail.  You can escape if you are tagged by your own team.  If someone from your team runs in but does not touch anyone, they cannot be tagged.  However, the moment the "rescuer" begins tagging folks, all bets are off and they can be tagged.
  • One more thing about the jail.  We put the jail about 10-20 ft. from the center line.  That way it is easy to get out.  This makes jail more of an inconvenience.  Nothing kills a game more than sitting in jail all game.  Make sure this does not happen.
  • When someone gets tagged they do NOT have to be escorted to jail.
Keep the game moving.  We really emphasize attacking.  If you are not in enemy territory, you are not going to win.
  • 15-20 minutes a game
  • Jr. High (high schoolers are too cool)
  • 30-60 kids
  • We play in our city park that has a road down the middle.  That is the boundary.  We switch sides each game.
